Where to apply for an identity card?
Normally, you should be able to apply for your new identity card at the citizens’ office in your place of residence. You can usually apply for your identity card without an appointment, that is to say spontaneously, at the citizens’ offices in small towns and municipalities. Due to the current corona pandemic, however, it is often not possible to visit the local citizens’ office spontaneously and without an appointment. The identity card can also be requested at any other citizen’s office, i.e. different from your place of residence, or at many German embassies abroad. However, this is only recommended in an emergency, as in most cases there is a higher fees accumulate that at least 13 euros amounts to.
What documents do I need to apply for an identity card?
Normally, you will need the following documents to request or re-request your identity card:

A valid document for identification. This could be, for example, the old identity card (if it is not expired), the passport, the child identity card, the child passport or the birth certificate.

For people under the age of 16, the identity card must be requested by a parent or legal guardian. A declaration of consent must also be available from the other legal guardian.

What should you consider for a passport photo?
On June 3, 2020, the federal government adopted a new law according to which in future the passport photos required for the identity card must also be available in digital form. This should help to further improve the security of the identity card. For a fee of six euros, the photo can be taken either directly from the competent authority or in a photo shop. If the photo is taken at a photo store, it should also be ensured that the store sends the photo securely to the passport authority.
Among other things, this aims to prevent the so-called morphing, in which a new face is created by merging several different faces and the illegal issuance or use of the ID card is prevented.
How much will the 2022 identity card cost in Germany?
For citizens from 24 years old the identity card will cost from this year 37 euros. For the people under 24 is the tax 22.80 euros. It doesn’t matter whether you apply for the ID card with the online function enabled or disabled.
What is the online function of the identity card?
With the online function, you can also identify yourself with your ID card on the Internet or at machines. According to the Federal Office for Information Security, the data is always protected. Do you always have to have your identity card with you?
It is a common misconception that you should always have your ID card with you. It is not a legal obligation. In the event of an inspection, however, you must be able to present or show your identity card as soon as possible.
