NEW YORK (CBSNew York) – With many people tired of the COVID-19 pandemic and making trips, the Transportation Security Administration – or TSA – grabs more bizarre objects to safety.

On Wednesday, the agency gave CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the stories and explained why it looks like there are more.

“Oh yeah, we have some very interesting stuff here,” TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said.

Inside a nearly 50-pound box were items travelers had in their carry-on luggage at LaGuardia Airport.

“You don’t really want to see someone with a saw on an airplane,” Farbstein said.

All prohibited items were captured by the TSA on Wednesday morning, alone.

“It’s only one terminal,” Farbstein said.

Farbstein showed DeAngelis some of the bizarre items he collected, from a key to a lipstick case and belt, knives, a common item, are often in disguise.

“One of the common things we’re starting to see are credit card knives. It contains a razor sharp blade and folds into itself to make it a pretty dangerous weapon, ”said Farbstein.

“It’s definitely an upward trend. We’re seeing a lot more of it, ”said Robert Cadiz, TSA’s master security training instructor.

The TSA says since the pandemic there have been fewer business travelers – frequent travelers familiar with the rules – and more leisure travelers who may not be.

“From 2019 until today, we have not only had a significantly lower number of passengers, but since then we have had a total of over 16,000 pounds, or eight tonnes of prohibited items recovered,” Cadiz said. . “It’s definitely an upward trend. “

When the TSA catches the items, they give passengers the option to put it in a registered bag, bring it back in the car, give it to a traveling companion, or hand it over voluntarily, which is the case with all objects that DeAngelis was shown.

“We have also seen individuals with jewelry that is live ammunition,” Cadiz said.

Cadiz said he saw it all and added illegal items like brass knuckles and Tasers that could get you arrested.

He said he was confident trained security guards would find them.

“Radiography is actually one of our best tools,” Cadiz said.

So, check your bag before you get on the plane and make sure nothing is mistakenly left inside.

The TSA said items collected from airports across the country are transferred to the state, which can sell them and make a profit.
